Do you need ant control?

As the weather gets nicer outside, ants are more likely to appear. Especially during mild winters, these tiny creatures survive and can be very numerous. Ants often nest near food sources.  This can be near kitchens, in gardens, or elsewhere in homes. The creatures can sometimes cause a lot of nuisance and even damage. Do you want to learn more about ants? On this page, you’ll find all the information about different types of ants (black ants, pharaoh ants, flying ants, ant colonies, etc.), the costs of detection and treatment, how to detect ants, and ant control methods. You’re in the right place with Eversor for expert advice and professional treatments.

How do I recognize the species of ants that I’m dealing with?

Ants can cause a lot of nuisance and even damage. Ant control can indeed be very helpful. Sometimes a infestation can even be so severe that it causes sinkage. Furthermore, it’s just very annoying to have these little creatures crawling around your kitchen or on the terrace. So, have the ants exterminated as soon as possible and leave the extermination to a professional.

Which species of ants are found in Belgium?

Many different species of ants are found in Belgium. In this article, we’ll look at the 5 most remarkable ant species. 1. Black Garden Ant 2. Wood Ants 3. Garden Ants 4. Pharaoh Ant 5. Argentine Ant

1. Black Garden Ant

The black garden ant (Lasius niger) is the most common ant species in Belgium. They build nests in the ground, feed on sweet secretions from aphids, and organic material. The ants communicate through pheromones. They form large colonies with queens, males, and workers. Although generally harmless, they can cause nuisance by building nests in gardens or buildings.

2. Wood Ants

Wood ants are medium to large ants that live in forests. They build nests in the ground and communicate through pheromones. Wood ants are omnivores and play an important role in forest ecosystems by helping with soil aeration and the decomposition of organic material.

3. Garden Ants

Garden ants are small ants and build nests in the ground. They feed on a variety of food, including insects and plant saps. They communicate through pheromones and live in colonies with queens, males, and workers. Garden ants play an important role in garden ecosystems but can sometimes cause nuisance by building nests in unwanted locations.

4. Pharaoh Ant

Pharaoh ants are exotic small, yellow or light brown ants. They are rarely found in Belgium. The ants live in warm, humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms and feed on a wide range of food. Pharaoh ants live in large colonies with multiple queens and are known for their ability to spread quickly. They can spread germs and are difficult to control due to their small size. Pharaoh ant infestations require professional pest control.

5. Argentine Ant

The Mediterranean Argentine ant is a medium-sized ant species found in Mediterranean regions. They build their nests in the ground and feed on a variety of food. These ants are known for their erratic walking pattern. Although generally harmless, they can sometimes cause nuisance by building nests in gardens and around buildings. In recent years, this species has become increasingly common in Belgium.

What treatment methods are available for ants?

Ants are sometimes difficult to control, there are different techniques and means to perform an effective control. Eversor has a wide range of the most innovative and advanced techniques to exterminate ants. Often, this can even be done without the use of biocides.

Chemical method

The most common method of ant control is chemical treatment. This involves the use of biocides. Due to increasingly stringent regulations, it is becoming more difficult to carry out a chemical treatment. Volgens de IPM-methodiek moeten eerst niet-giftige methoden gebruikt worden.

Biological Methods

Another technique for controlling ants is using nematodes. By using parasitic nematodes, also called nematodes. The nematode species S. feltiae can be used to control ant larvae. The nematodes penetrate the larvae, causing them to die. The ants recognize the intruder and are deterred because they cannot tolerate the nematodes. As a result, they will seek another location to build their nests. You can order the nematodes from our online store or schedule an appointment for us to carry out the treatment.

Home, garden & kitchen methods

There are many do-it-yourself treatments for ants. Below are 3 do-it-yourself solutions using household items:

1. Repelling ants with vinegar

Start by filling a spray bottle with a mixture of water and vinegar. Spray this on the areas where you see ants walking, as well as in the nest. As an alternative, you can also use pure vinegar, but keep in mind that this has a strong odor. Although vinegar doesn’t solve the ant infestation, it does help to keep the nuisance under control. Especially with a small infestation, this can be useful.

2. Combating ants with baking soda or salt

Another method to combat ants in the house is by using salt or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda). Mix it with a little powdered sugar and distribute the mixture over several bowls. Place these bowls in areas where you often see ants. The ants will take the mixture back to their colony, eat it, and die. Ants explode after ingesting salt. It won’t eradicate the entire nest, but it will certainly lead to a significant reduction in the number of ants.

3. Repel ants with talcum powder

An easy way to keep ants outdoors is by using talcum powder. By sprinkling talcum powder or baby powder, or drawing a chalk line, an ant trail can be temporarily disrupted. The ants get confused by the scents of the talcum. However, after a while, the ants will restore their own scent trails and resume the trail. Disrupting the ant trail with chalk or baby powder, therefore, temporarily keeps the ants away. It does not kill them, but is a convenient temporary solution.

How does Eversor handle ant infestations?

As soon as you contact us, we get to work.

First, we prepare specifications of your situation. We look specifically at your case here. In doing so, we take into account the location and the desired result. Based on our findings, we will create a personalized treatment plan and quote for you.

If you agree to the treatment method, you will be contacted as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

The method of treatment varies from case to case. We may expect to need several treatments to properly resolve your problem. It may require only a single appointment to fix your problem.

During our 1st visit, we always start with a brief conversation and visual inspection. From this, some tips regarding prevention, warding and hygiene almost always follow. With preventive treatments and with EverSmart, we do the installation and other works directly. After this, if necessary, we will begin treatment immediately. Whenever possible, we take a completely non-toxic or biological approach (following the IPM method). If this is not an option, we use biocides.

After the initial treatment is over, you will receive all findings and required documentation online.

In any follow-up treatment, which often occurs after several weeks, we perform an inspection first. This way we know to what extent the initial treatment was successful and where our plan needs to be adjusted. After a follow-up treatment, you will receive the necessary documentation online again.

After the treatment, you will receive some tips and possible preventive measures to keep pests away even in the long run. You will also receive additional tips and information regarding inspections.

9 times out of 10, the problem is solved after the scheduled treatments. If the problem is still not resolved we will look at possible next steps.
