Do you suffer from a lot of mosquitoes?

When the weather outside gets warmer, mosquitoes tend to appear more often. They buzz at night, keeping you awake, and also sting, which is very annoying. Especially in mild winters, which are becoming more frequent in Belgium, mosquitoes survive the winter and can be very numerous. Mosquitoes need water to lay their eggs. A stagnant water source such as a bucket of water, a pond in the garden, in the basement, or elsewhere in the house, is ideal for mosquitoes. Do you want to know more about mosquitoes? On this page, you’ll find all the information about different types of mosquitoes (such as biting mosquitoes, drain flies, Asian tiger mosquito, midges, crane flies, etc.), the costs of detection and treatment, how to detect mosquitoes, and mosquito control methods. You’re in the right place with Eversor for expert advice and professional treatments.

How do I recognize the type of mosquito that’s bothering me?

Mosquitoes can cause a lot of nuisance. You’d rather be rid of the critters than have them around. So, have the ants exterminated as soon as possible and leave the extermination to a professional.

Which types of mosquitoes are found in Belgium?

Several species of mosquitoes are found in Belgium. You might not even realize that some of them are actually mosquitoes. In this article, we look at the 5 most important mosquito species.

1. Stinging mosquitoes

The most common mosquito in Belgium. Biting mosquitoes are recognizable by their long proboscis, which is about half the length of their body. This proboscis, which is actually their jaws and lips, has evolved into a piercing device. Female biting mosquitoes can easily find us in the dark thanks to our body heat and the CO² we exhale. They bite us and suck blood, using their saliva to prevent the blood from clotting. The itching and swelling occur as a reaction of our body to this saliva.

2. Drain flies (sewer flies)

Drain flies are distinguished from traditional mosquitoes by their “furry” appearance. Drain flies are better known as sewer flies. Dit is vanwege hun leefgebied in rioleringen, toiletten, badkamers, en andere vochtrijke plekken. So, drain flies thrive in moist environments. Here, they feed on leftover food or waste that has been washed away in drains or puddles of water.

3. Crane flies

Crane flies stand out due to their notably large size compared to other mosquitoes. They owe their name to their exceptionally long and slender legs, their slim body, and large wings. Crane flies do not bite. So, they are harmless, but the larvae, also known as leatherjackets, that live among the grass roots, can cause damage to your environment, such as bare patches in the lawn. The crane fly is mainly active during the evening and night and spends most of its daytime on plants. Their diet primarily consists of nectar. They mainly inhabit plants to encounter potential mates and mate.

4. The Asian Tiger Mosquito

The Asian tiger mosquito has recently appeared in South and Central Europe. The mosquito has spread through international transport from Southeast Asia, where it is a native mosquito species. The Asian tiger mosquito has managed to adapt extremely well to its new environment. It’s very concerning that the mosquito spreads tropical infectious diseases such as dengue (breakbone fever), yellow fever, and chikungunya.

5. Midges

Midges are easily distinguishable from the most common mosquito, the biting mosquito, by their larger and whiter wings, which are folded like a roof over their back when they rest. They are approximately 10 mm long with a light brown to green body.
They are also known as “midge flies” due to the two brush-like “feathers” on their heads, which males use to detect female pheromones. They got the name dance mosquito from their dancing flight movements. These mosquitoes are often found in large groups around water. They lay their eggs in the water, where they hatch into red larvae that feed on plant debris in ditches or lakes.

What about do-it-yourself remedies from the internet or the store?

Beginning mosquito infestations can often be repelled with do-it-yourself methods. You can find these in our webshop. For major infestations, it’s better to seek assistance from a professional. For complex infestations, the right pesticides are needed, and these are only accessible to professionals. That’s because the biocides used are often highly toxic. A professional knows how to handle this, understands the risks of usage, and knows how to protect themselves, you, and your environment from the dangers of the poison.

What treatment methods are available for ants?

Mosquitoes need stagnant water to lay their eggs. A nearby water source is ideal for mosquitoes. Fully adhering to IPM principles, we first search for the source. Once we know where the problem originates, we proceed further. We assess if and how the mosquitoes can be controlled. This is relatively easy if the cause lies with your pond in the garden or with stagnant water in the basement. However, if the problem arises from, for example, a water body outdoors that you do not manage, this can become more difficult.

Chemical method

Biocides will often be resorted to for mosquitoes. Indoors, we do this by sealing the water surface in with a layer of oil with insecticides. Another option is an automatic sprayer that disperses a natural gas, or a combination of both. It’s important that the eggs hatch before we control the mosquitoes. After treatment, we give advice on sealing openings. This way, mosquitoes can no longer enter the basement.

Preventive do-it-yourself methods

For smaller infestations or causes beyond your control, preventive (do-it-yourself) solutions can offer a potential remedy. In the Eversor webshop, a wide range of items is available for preventing mosquitoes.

Here are 3 do-it-yourself solutions below.

1. Screens (insect screens) for windows and doors

During warm summer days and nights, it’s nice to be able to leave windows and doors open. Ideally, this can be done without mosquitoes entering. Install screens for the windows and doors. The fine mesh prevents mosquitoes from entering, so you can sleep peacefully and with the fresh air outside.

2. The mosquito plug

A mosquito plug can emit ultrasonic sounds to keep mosquitoes at bay. Additionally, there are mosquito plugs that emit scents. These scents, such as lemon eucalyptus, mask the CO2 emitted by your body. This way you will be untraceable to the mosquito. Plug the device into the electrical outlet, and mosquitoes will stay out of your bedroom. A very animal and environmentally friendly solution.

3. The mosquito lamp

Another solution is the mosquito lamp. This lamp emits blue UV light, attracting mosquitoes. Once the mosquitoes fly towards the light, they are (depending on the model) electrocuted or stick to the adhesive strip. In the Eversor online store, you’ll find the best mosquito lamps suitable for home use as well as for businesses.

So there are quite a few methods to prevent and exterminate mosquitoes. Can’t figure it out? Then please contact us. We’re happy to help you out.

How does Eversor handle mosquito nuisance?

As soon as you contact us, we get to work.

First, we prepare specifications of your situation. We look specifically at your case here. In doing so, we take into account the location and the desired result. Based on our findings, we will create a personalized treatment plan and quote for you.

If you agree to the treatment method, you will be contacted as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

The method of treatment varies from case to case. We may expect to need several treatments to properly resolve your problem. It may require only a single appointment to fix your problem.

During our 1st visit, we always start with a brief conversation and visual inspection. From this, some tips regarding prevention, warding and hygiene almost always follow. With preventive treatments and with EverSmart, we do the installation and other works directly. After this, if necessary, we will begin treatment immediately. Whenever possible, we take a completely non-toxic or biological approach (following the IPM method). If this is not an option, we use biocides.

After the initial treatment is over, you will receive all findings and required documentation online.

In any follow-up treatment, which often occurs after several weeks, we perform an inspection first. This way we know to what extent the initial treatment was successful and where our plan needs to be adjusted. After a follow-up treatment, you will receive the necessary documentation online again.

After the treatment, you will receive some tips and possible preventive measures to keep pests away even in the long run. You will also receive additional tips and information regarding inspections.

9 times out of 10, the problem is solved after the scheduled treatments. If the problem is still not resolved we will look at possible next steps.
